Pre-Season Outlook
Neither a workout warrior nor a college superstar, McConkey nonetheless has an excellent opportunity to quickly make an impact in the NFL. The Chargers drafted him 34th overall after releasing Mike Williams and trading Keenan Allen earlier in the offseason, leaving the rookie to compete for snaps with 2023 first-round pick Quentin Johnson and known mediocrities Joshua Palmer and DJ Chark. It'll likely be a much more run-focused offense than what QB Justin Herbert is accustomed to, with new coach Jim Harbaugh bringing in former Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman to fill the same role, but as long as Herbert stays healthy the Chargers won't be at the bottom of the league for passing/receiving production. Enter McConkey, who ran a 4.39 40 at 6-0, 189, following an unusual college career marked by impressive efficiency and modest volume. He averaged at least 2.08 yards per route and 9.3 per target in each of his three seasons at Georgia -- numbers that could translate to 1,000-plus yards if he'd been a healthy, full-time player in a more pass-heavy offense.
